Estradiol (E2) – what do your levels mean?
Have you had your Estradiol (E2) levels measured and are unsure what the numbers mean? Here, you’ll find a clear explanation of the normal range, what high or low levels can indicate, and when it makes sense to get tested.
What is the normal range for Estradiol (E2)?
What is the normal range for Estradiol (E2)?
The normal range for Estradiol (E2) varies depending on age, gender, and physiological conditions. For women of reproductive age, levels typically range between 0.24 and 2.4 nmol/L in the middle of the menstrual cycle, while after menopause, it drops to below 0.08 nmol/L. For men, the normal range is 0.048-0.17 nmol/L. For children, values vary depending on age and gender; for example, girls aged 8-11 years have values below 0.25 nmol/L. Reference values can vary between laboratories due to different analytical methods. Being close to the reference limits can indicate hormonal imbalances or diseases and should be evaluated by a doctor.
What does a low level mean?
A low level of Estradiol can lead to symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, decreased bone density, and mood swings. In women, it may be due to ovarian failure, anovulatory cycles, or hypothalamic/pituitary insufficiency. In men, it may indicate testicular dysfunction. Groups such as postmenopausal women and individuals with eating disorders or chronic diseases are particularly susceptible. It is important to contact a doctor for further investigation and possible treatment, which may include hormone therapy or treatment of underlying causes.
What does a high level mean?
A high level of Estradiol can lead to symptoms such as weight gain, breast tenderness, and mood swings. In women, it may be due to estrogen-producing tumors, pregnancy, or treatment with gonadotropins. In men, it may indicate liver disease or feminization. Extreme obesity can also lead to elevated levels. It is important to seek medical advice if elevated Estradiol is suspected, as it may be a sign of serious underlying conditions such as hormone-producing tumors or metabolic disorders. Treatment depends on the specific cause.
