Magnesium – what do your numbers mean?

Have you had your magnesium level measured and are unsure what the numbers mean? Here you will find a clear explanation of the normal range, what a too high or too low level can mean, and when it makes sense to get tested.

What is the normal range for Magnesium?

What is the normal range for Magnesium?

The normal range for magnesium in the blood is typically between 0.70 and 0.95 mmol/L for adults. During pregnancy, values may be slightly lower, typically between 0.60 and 0.90 mmol/L. It is important to note that reference intervals may vary slightly depending on the laboratory's measurement methods and the reference population. If the magnesium value is close to the limit values, it may indicate a risk of either deficiency or excess, which can affect the body's normal functions. Therefore, such values should be assessed by a doctor.

What does a low level mean?

A low level of magnesium, also called hypomagnesemia, can lead to symptoms such as muscle weakness, cramps, fatigue, loss of appetite, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias. The most common causes include malnutrition, chronic diarrhea, alcoholism, certain medications such as diuretics, and kidney diseases. Particularly vulnerable groups are the elderly, people with chronic diseases, and those with poor nutrition. If low magnesium is suspected, a doctor should be contacted to have the level measured and possibly receive supplements or treatment.

What does a high level mean?

A high level of magnesium, known as hypermagnesemia, can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, low blood pressure, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest. This is often seen in people with impaired kidney function, as the kidneys cannot effectively excrete excess magnesium. Other causes may include excessive intake of magnesium-containing supplements or medications. If symptoms of high magnesium are experienced, immediate medical attention should be sought, especially if there is an underlying kidney disease.
