Platelets (Thrombocytes) – what do your levels mean?
Have you had your Platelet (Thrombocyte) level measured and are unsure what the numbers mean? Here's a clear explanation of the normal range, what high or low levels can indicate, and when it makes sense to get tested.
What is the normal range for Platelets (Thrombocytes)?
What is the normal range for Platelets (Thrombocytes)?
The normal range for platelets (thrombocytes) varies depending on age, gender, and physiological conditions. For adult men, the normal range is between 145-350 billion/L, while for women it is 165-400 billion/L. For children and adolescents, values vary significantly: from 85-590 billion/L for newborns (0-14 days) to 165-435 billion/L for children between 2 and 18 years. Pregnant women also have slightly higher values, ranging from 165-405 billion/L up to the 35th week of pregnancy and 150-390 billion/L up to 2 days after birth. These variations are due to differences in physiology and hormonal influences. Being close to the limit values can indicate an underlying condition that should be assessed by a doctor, especially if there are accompanying symptoms.
What does a low level mean?
A low level of platelets, also known as thrombocytopenia, can lead to an increased risk of bleeding. Symptoms include easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding when brushing teeth, and heavier menstruation. Causes can include reduced production in the bone marrow, increased destruction of platelets in autoimmune diseases, or increased consumption in conditions such as disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Particularly vulnerable groups include people undergoing chemotherapy or with autoimmune diseases. At values below 20 billion/L, there is a risk of spontaneous bleeding, and urgent medical attention is necessary. Treatment depends on the cause and may include platelet transfusions or medication.
What does a high level mean?
A high level of platelets, known as thrombocytosis, can be reactive (secondary) or primary. Reactive thrombocytosis often occurs as a result of infections, inflammation, iron deficiency, or after surgical procedures. Primary thrombocytosis is caused by uncontrolled production in the bone marrow and is seen in diseases such as essential thrombocythemia or leukemia. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, and an increased risk of blood clots. At very high values (over 1000 billion/L), there can also be a risk of bleeding. It is important to seek medical attention for persistently elevated values to identify the cause and initiate appropriate treatment, which may include medication to reduce the platelet count.
