Alkaline phosphatase – what do your numbers mean?
Have you had your alkaline phosphatase level measured and are unsure what the numbers mean? Here's a clear explanation of the normal range, what a high or low level can indicate, and when it makes sense to get tested.
What is the normal range for alkaline phosphatase?
What is the normal range for alkaline phosphatase?
The normal range for alkaline phosphatase in healthy adults is typically 35-105 U/L (units per liter). In children and adolescents, values can be up to four times higher due to normal bone growth, while pregnant women may experience increases up to three times higher from around the 20th week of pregnancy. It is important to note that reference intervals can vary depending on the laboratory's measurement methods. If a value is close to the limits, it may indicate early disease processes or physiological conditions such as growth or pregnancy.
What does a low level mean?
A low level of alkaline phosphatase is relatively rare and may indicate conditions such as vitamin B12 deficiency, reduced metabolism (hypothyroidism), or certain types of cancer such as bone marrow cancer (multiple myeloma) and leukemia. Symptoms may include fatigue, weakness, and bone problems. Particularly vulnerable groups include individuals with poor nutrition or chronic diseases. If you have a low level, you should consult a doctor for further investigation and treatment.
What does a high level mean?
A high level of alkaline phosphatase can be caused by diseases of the liver and bile ducts, such as gallstones or liver cancer, or bone diseases such as bone metastases and vitamin D deficiency. Symptoms may include jaundice, bone pain, or fatigue. It is important to seek medical attention for persistently elevated values to identify the underlying cause. Your doctor may recommend further tests such as gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) to differentiate between liver- and bone-related causes.
